چکیده

It is demonstrated that (3Z)-nonenal (NON) and (3Z)-hexenal (HEX) are oxidized in a cascade by lipoxygenase (LOX) and hydroperoxide peroxygenase (HP peroxygenase) into (2E)-4-hydroxy-2nonenal (HNE) and (2E)-4-hydroxy-2-hexenal (HHE), respectively. In turn, HNE inactivates LOX terminating the cascade. The hydroxy-alkenals produced serve to inhibit plant pathogens, which initiated the cascade. In addition to LOX, other unknown oxygenases may be involved in the cascade.

Formation of 4-hydroxy-2-alkenals in barley leaves.

In barley leaves 13-lipoxygenases are induced by jasmonates. This leads to induction of lipid peroxidation. Here we show by in vitro studies that these processes may further lead to autoxidative formation of (2E)-4-hydroxy-2-hexenal from (3Z)-hexenal.

Proline-catalyzed one-step asymmetric synthesis of 5-hydroxy-(2E)-hexenal from acetaldehyde.

For the first time, the L-proline-catalyzed direct asymmetric self-aldolization of acetaldehyde is described affording (+)-(5S)-hydroxy-(2E)-hexenal 2 with ee's ranging from 57 to 90%. Further transformations of 2 into synthetically valuable building blocks are presented. A mechanism for the formation of 2 is proposed.

Protection against photooxidative injury of tobacco leaves by 2-alkenal reductase. Detoxication of lipid peroxide-derived reactive carbonyls.

Degradation of lipid peroxides leads to the formation of cytotoxic 2-alkenals and oxenes (collectively designated reactive carbonyls). The novel NADPH-dependent oxidoreductase 2-alkenal reductase (AER; EC 1.3.1.74) from Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), which is encoded by the gene At5g16970, catalyzes the reduction of the alpha,beta-unsaturated bond of reactive carbonyls, and hence is presum...

The involvement of lipid peroxide-derived aldehydes in aluminum toxicity of tobacco roots.

Oxidative injury of the root elongation zone is a primary event in aluminum (Al) toxicity in plants, but the injuring species remain unidentified. We verified the hypothesis that lipid peroxide-derived aldehydes, especially highly electrophilic alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes (2-alkenals), participate in Al toxicity. Transgenic tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) overexpressing Arabidopsis (Arabidopsi...

Ethanol withdrawal increases glutathione adducts of 4-hydroxy-2-hexenal but not 4-hydroxyl-2-nonenal in the rat cerebral cortex.

Ethanol withdrawal increases lipid peroxidation of the polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) docosahexaenoate (22:6; n-3) in the CNS. To further define the role of oxidative damage of PUFAs during ethanol withdrawal, we measured the levels of glutathione adducts of 4-hydroxy-2-hexenal (GSHHE) and 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (GSHNE) as biomarkers of brain lipid peroxidation of n-3 and n-6 PUFAs, respectivel...
